Finding the Average
According to Susan Ashdown, a professor in the Department of Fiber Science & Apparel Design at Cornell and a leading researcher on improving apparel fit, there's no such thing. In a recent piece by Virginia Postrel, Ashdown is quoted as saying: "The average takes you to nobody."

Survey finds that women shop by size, but hope for fit
Talbots, an upscale women's wear company, recently conducted a national "fit" survey. In general, they found that most women know their size, but not their body measurements. These same women state that much of the clothing they own is either too big, too small, or needs to be tailored to fit properly.
