Finding Diaper Brands that Fit Your Baby and Your Budget
Disposable diapers often come in mega multi-packs. I keep hearing from moms that don’t seem to be able to use all of them up before their baby needs the next size up… To top it off, sizes seem to fit differently and work differently from diaper brand to diaper brand.
ConsumerReports.org says that the average parent will spend between $1,500 and $2,000 on disposables by the time a baby grows out of them. Why spend more if you don’t have to?
Because diaper brands differ, you may have to try several brands before you find the one that is just right for your baby. Here are some tips for trying and buying diapers:
- Ask around – talk with other parents to see what brands they prefer and why.
- Try small tests – Buy a small number of diapers in a given brand and size and see how they fit and if they do the job. If not, you haven’t invested a lot of money in something that doesn’t work.
- Compare fit – Diaper brands size their products differently. Keep in mind that a size 2 in Pampers may not fit the same as a size 2 in Huggies.
- Check for problems – Leaks are one of the most common issues – from the legs, up the back, and from just about any and every where the diaper doesn’t fit properly. Skin irritation is another common concern – check your baby’s skin periodically after trying a new brand to make sure there is no redness or irritation.
- Try specialty styles – Some brands offer different cuts for preemies, husky babies, girls and boys, babies with umbilical cords, walking vs. crawling babies – you name it – to offer better leak protection and fit. If cost is not a concern, try out these diapers to see if they work better for your baby than the standard fit.
- Try store brands – Sometimes in-store brands work just as well as name-brand diapers, but come at a more affordable price. Test these brands in the same way you would any other diaper.
- Consider cloth – Cloth diapers can be more comfortable and are more easily-adjustable. With all of the modern cloth diaper styles available, you’re sure to find something that meets your needs. Keep in mind that many cloth diaper companies have their own size charts – read these to find what will work best for your baby.
