The Holiday Pajama Tradition

One of my friends grew up in a household where every member of the family received a new pair of pajamas as a holiday gift each year. While she says that she and her siblings were not always very appreciative of them, this tradition stands out as a favorite childhood memory. Her parents made an effort to find pajamas that were fun and matched each child’s personality…and the kids wore those pajamas until they wore out. Make pajamas a part of your holiday tradition. The New Modesty Movement

Living in Utah, I am at the heart of the modest clothing movement. The Latter Day Saint community, AKA the Mormons, has a practice of dressing conservatively. Changing social norms and styles have led parents in this community - as well as many others around the US - to rebel against what they see as improper dress, particularly when it comes to their children. Their demand for more modest standards from clothing designers and their efforts to positively influence what their daughters wear has gained a lot of momentum recently. In large part, this is due to the finding that the size listed on shoes by the manufacturer is rarely the true size. In nearly all cases, the manufacturers overstate the size. Here are some tips for navigating shoe sizes and finding shoes that fit your child properly. Read the rest of this entry »

The Battle Between your Child’s Growth and the Sizes they Wear

A former statistics professor of mine had a favorite saying: "Stuff varies." The same can be said of children. Children grow frequently, and they do it in different ways and at different rates from each other. Yes, you can find typical growth trends when you look at a whole bunch of kids. But, when you're shopping for your own kid, his or her measurements are all that matter. What's the deal with sizes anyway? Read the rest of this entry »
